Safety first

The captain always

Direct sea transfers are weather-dependent. No timetable, booking or commercial pressure takes priority over safe operating conditions.

Weather & sea conditions

Conditions are reviewed with the operator before departure. A trip may be delayed, held or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.

Captain authority

The captain has final authority on departure, delay, route changes, turnaround or cancellation.

Passenger manifest

Passenger names and essential travel information are recorded before departure.

Life-saving equipment

Partner vessels are expected to carry appropriate life jackets and route-appropriate safety equipment.

Communication

Operating boats should maintain appropriate marine and/or satellite communication for the route.

Fallback options

If a direct transfer cannot operate, available alternatives may include another departure, ferry if suitable, credit or refund under the booking policy.

Who operates the boats?

Mentawai Connect is a booking and coordination platform. We do not own or operate the vessels. Transfers are operated by independent third-party boat operators and their crews. The assigned operator is responsible for the operation of its vessel and the operational requirements applicable to that vessel.

Sea travel in Mentawai can involve changing swell, wind and weather conditions. Travel times are estimates, not guarantees.

This page is still MVP copy. Before public launch, it should match the actual licensing, insurance and safety equipment of each vessel/operator used.

Booking policy

Terms &
Conditions.

A clear framework for reservations, confirmations, cancellations, weather disruptions and passenger responsibilities.

1. Scheduled departures

A FORMING departure is not guaranteed. A CONFIRMED departure is scheduled to operate subject to weather, sea conditions, vessel availability, captain approval and any required clearance from the relevant port or maritime authorities.

2. Pricing

Published prices are per passenger, one way, unless otherwise stated.

3. Forming departures

Reservations on a FORMING departure do not constitute a guaranteed departure. Once the departure is confirmed, passengers will be asked to complete payment within the stated payment window.

4. Confirmed departures

Payment is required to secure the seat. Unpaid reservations may expire and the seat may be released.

5. Passenger cancellations

  • More than 7 days before departure: 90% refund.
  • Between 72 hours and 7 days before departure: 50% refund.
  • Less than 72 hours before departure: non-refundable.

Name changes or seat transfers may be accepted subject to passenger manifest and operator requirements.

6. Weather / operator cancellation

If the scheduled boat cannot operate due to weather, sea conditions, safety considerations, lack of required maritime clearance, vessel availability or operator cancellation, passengers will be entitled to a refund of the affected transfer. Where useful, Mentawai Connect may also share information about another available departure or alternative transport, but passengers are not required to accept an alternative instead of the applicable refund.

7. Safety authority & departure clearance

All departures are subject to final operational and safety clearance. The vessel captain has authority to delay, alter, turn back or cancel a journey based on conditions at sea. In addition, departures are subject to any clearance or authorization required by the relevant Padang port and maritime authorities. A transfer cannot depart without the required authorization, regardless of its booking status.

8. Travel times

Journey durations, departure times and arrival times are estimates and may change significantly due to sea conditions, weather, operational requirements or maritime instructions.

9. Alternative transport

Where appropriate, Mentawai Connect may share available ferry or alternative transport information. Availability, schedules and operation of third-party alternatives are not guaranteed by Mentawai Connect.

10. Passenger information & passport requirements

Passengers must provide accurate personal and contact information, accommodation or camp details, baggage and surfboard information, and any other information required to prepare the passenger manifest.

A clear photo or copy of each passenger's passport will be required before departure for identification and manifest purposes. Passengers are responsible for ensuring that the information provided matches their travel document.

Passengers must arrive at the designated meeting point at the communicated time. Failure to provide required documentation or to arrive on time may result in the passenger being unable to travel.

11. No-show

Passengers who fail to arrive at the designated meeting point by the communicated time may be treated as no-shows and may not be entitled to a refund.

12. Platform role, vessel operators, liability & travel insurance

Mentawai Connect is a booking and coordination platform that connects passengers with available third-party boat operators. Mentawai Connect does not own or operate the vessels used for transfers and does not employ the vessel captains or crews.

Each vessel is independently owned and operated by the third-party boat operator assigned to that departure. The relevant operator is responsible for the operation of its vessel and crew and for the licences, permits, insurance, vessel documentation and onboard safety equipment required for its operation under applicable rules.

Mentawai Connect's role is to coordinate shared transfers, passenger bookings and operational communication between passengers, accommodation providers and available boat operators.

Sea travel involves inherent risks and may be affected by weather, sea conditions and other circumstances outside Mentawai Connect's reasonable control. Passengers are strongly encouraged to hold appropriate travel insurance covering sea transportation, trip disruption, cancellation, medical expenses and emergency evacuation.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any rights or liabilities that cannot legally be excluded under applicable law.

How Mentawai Connect collects and uses booking, contact and passenger information.

1. Information we collect

When you make or request a transfer, we may collect your name, WhatsApp number, email address, accommodation or camp, travel information, emergency contact, passenger numbers, baggage and surfboard information, and other details needed to coordinate the journey.

2. Passport information

For confirmed travel, we may require a clear photo or copy of the passport of each passenger where this information is needed for identification, passenger manifests, operator requirements or relevant port and maritime procedures.

3. Why we use your information

We use passenger information to process reservations, coordinate departures, prepare passenger manifests, communicate operational updates, process payments and refunds, respond to enquiries, comply with applicable transport or maritime requirements, and help manage passenger safety.

4. Sharing with vessel operators and authorities

Information necessary to operate a transfer may be shared with the vessel operator, captain or crew assigned to the journey and, where required, relevant port, maritime, immigration, safety or other competent authorities. We do not share passport information for unrelated marketing purposes.

5. Payments

Live online payments may be processed by a third-party payment provider. Mentawai Connect should not store full payment-card details on its own systems where payment is handled by that provider.

6. Storage and security

Mentawai Connect will take reasonable measures to protect personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or loss. Passport copies and other sensitive travel documents should only be stored using secure access-controlled systems in the live version of the service.

7. Retention

Personal information should be retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the transfer, operational records, legal obligations, dispute handling and legitimate business requirements. Passport copies should not be kept longer than necessary for the purpose for which they were collected.

8. Your choices and requests

You may contact Mentawai Connect to ask about personal information held in relation to your booking, request correction of inaccurate information, or request deletion where retention is no longer required by law or legitimate operational needs.

9. Communications

Booking and operational messages may be sent by WhatsApp or email using the contact details supplied during booking. These messages may include confirmations, payment requests, meeting information, weather updates, delays and cancellation information.
